The reason the US Air Force is reviving the B-1B Lancer supersonic bomber fleet.

The delays of the B-21 Raider and its 57-ton payload advantage forced the Pentagon to spend hundreds of millions of dollars overhauling B-1B aircraft from special storage.

The U.S. Air Force is making a noteworthy strategic move by bringing B-1B Lancer supersonic bombers back into service from the "aircraft graveyard." Although once considered an outdated legacy from the Cold War, hundreds of millions of dollars are now being invested in overhauling and replacing components to maintain their long-range deterrence capabilities.

From missions to penetrate air defenses to "flying artillery"

Designed in the 1970s and 1980s, the B-1B Lancer features a distinctive variable-sweep wing design, allowing it to fly at subsonic speeds (Mach 0.92) at extremely low altitudes to avoid enemy radar. However, prolonged operation close to the ground created enormous mechanical stress on the airframe, reducing its lifespan and causing numerous technical malfunctions.

After the Cold War ended, the B-1B shifted from a strategic nuclear deterrence role to a tactical bombing mission. In battlefields like Iraq and Afghanistan, it became a "flying artillery" system with a massive payload of bombs and ammunition, capable of destroying large-scale targets in a single sortie.

The reality of declining aircraft fleets and the "cannibalism" solution.

High combat intensity and heavy payloads have caused the B-1B fleet to deteriorate rapidly. In 2019, many aircraft were temporarily taken out of service due to ejection seat system failures and structural damage. Because the production line had closed, technicians had to resort to "cannibalism"—scraping components from damaged aircraft to maintain the remaining ones.

By 2021, the number of combat-ready B-1B bombers had decreased from 62 to 45. Those that were decommissioned were transferred to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, often referred to as the “aircraft graveyard.”

Type 2000 storage mode: Tactical hibernation

However, not all aircraft at Davis-Monthan were dismantled. Some B-1Bs were maintained in a special preservation regime called Type 2000. In this state, the aircraft were drained of fuel, the intakes sealed, and the hydraulic systems and variable-geometry wings underwent routine maintenance. The F101-GE-102 jet engines were still tested to ensure their rapid return to service.

In 2023 and 2024, the U.S. Air Force successfully restored aircraft from this mode to replace those severely damaged by fire. Notably, an old B-1B was revived after replacing more than 500 parts and became the command aircraft of the 7th Tactical Bomber Squadron in early 2026.

Pressure from delays in the B-21 Raider program.

The main reason the Pentagon is "re-entering" the B-1B is that the new generation B-21 Raider bomber has not been delivered on time. While the B-21 is still in the testing phase, older aircraft such as the B-1B, B-2, and B-52H are deteriorating faster than expected.

Despite its numerous technical issues, the B-1B aircraft possesses many advantages that are essential to the US Air Force.

Between 2027 and 2031, a budget of $342 million has been approved for the restoration and maintenance of the B-1B fleet. Besides its top speed of Mach 1.25, the B-1B boasts an impressive payload capacity of up to 57 tons (34 tons in the internal bay and 23 tons on external pylons), far exceeding even stealth bombers like the B-2 or B-21.

Currently, the B-1B serves as the optimal platform for deploying AGM-158 JASSM stealth cruise missiles and LRASM anti-ship missiles from beyond enemy air defense range, filling a strategic operational gap for the US military.
