Patient NTD (13 years old) was brought to the clinic by her mother after noticing unusual and extremely strange symptoms. The child had a vacant expression and looked at her mother with fear. When her mother approached, the child screamed and ran away.

“Initially, the family thought the child was suffering from depression or a teenage crisis, so they took her for a check-up. However, after a private examination and conversation with the doctor, the child admitted to using 5-10 LSD blotter papers daily. She was experiencing paranoia and psychosis due to LSD use,” said Dr. Huynh Thanh Hien, Head of Department T3, Ho Chi Minh City Mental Hospital.

Under the influence of this stimulant, the 13-year-old boy saw his mother grow two fangs, like a devil. Therefore, he was always terrified, screaming and running away whenever he saw her.

According to Doctor Hien: LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a semi-synthetic substance derived from ergot fungus. LSD was synthesized in Switzerland in 1938. However, after a long period (from the late 1970s) when the "underworld" stopped producing it, this drug has recently reappeared.

It was "released" in the form of small pieces of paper (like stamps, 1.5x1.5cm in size) coated with a cute image of a famous character. The price was quite cheap. It was used by licking it with the tongue like a stamp or holding it on the tip of the tongue. Therefore, it was called a "paper stamp" or "tongue charm".

According to Doctor Hien, after licking or holding the "stamp" in the mouth, LSD enters the body and its effects can last up to 12 hours. Just 1 microgram per kilogram of body weight can cause hallucinations and psychosis lasting for several days.

In other words, a person with a normal weight (around 50-60kg) only needs a small amount of LSD, about 1/3 the size of a grain of salt, to experience hallucinations.

“LSD blotter paper is a new type of drug. It is the most potent hallucinogen and one of the two most dangerous drugs currently in existence. 100% of users experience hallucinations and psychosis when they reach the recommended dose,” Dr. Hien cited scientific assessments.

Cheap, as easy as buying… stamps.

The dangerous and alarming thing now is that "paper stamps" are sold cheaply and are easy to buy. Therefore, young people, even middle school students, can easily access them.

"What's particularly dangerous is that current rapid tests don't detect this substance (positively) when the user is tested," said Dr. Hien.

According to reports, a large sheet of "paper stamps" consisting of many smaller pieces costs around 300,000-500,000 VND, or about 250,000-300,000 VND at wholesale prices. This means each small piece costs only about 20,000 VND.

Currently, the exchange and sale of paper stamps is very easy and open. In fact, you can even find sellers on social media. From there, the "goods" easily reach users, especially young people.

According to Dr. Hien, because of their impact on the nervous system, drugs can cause: insomnia after use (for stimulants) and compensatory sleep after periods of insomnia; psychotic symptoms: hallucinations, delusions, agitated behavior; long-term use can cause personality changes and lead to many other social consequences.

Dr. Huynh Thanh Hien, Head of Department T3 at the Ho Chi Minh City Psychiatric Hospital, warned: "People who are high on crystal meth and ecstasy are equally dangerous when they go out. They are both agitated and can harm themselves and those around them. When experiencing psychosis or paranoia, they can either kill others or kill themselves."

These stimulants and drugs all cause psychosis. Those who use methamphetamine or synthetic marijuana often experience auditory hallucinations. That is, the person experiencing these hallucinations hears threatening, inciting, or commanding voices constantly echoing in their ears and mind, and they act according to these hallucinations.

As for "paper stamps" ("tongue charms"), users experience hallucinations. They see strange images, such as seeing their mother as a demon, seeing themselves on the ground while standing on an upper floor, or seeing themselves as superheroes or birds flying in the sky…
