Man Utd fired Ruben Amorim
The Portuguese manager was sacked after 14 months in charge of Man Utd.
Man Utd announced the dismissal this afternoon, January 5th.
Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.
"With Manchester United currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's management has reluctantly decided that now is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best chance of finishing the season in the highest possible position in the Premier League," the club's statement said.
The club would like to thank Ruben for his contributions to the club and wish him all the best in the future.
Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for Wednesday's match against Burnley.
Amorim's last match with the "Red Devils" was a 1-1 draw against Leeds United yesterday, January 4th. Man Utd are currently sixth in the Premier League table, with 31 points after 20 matches, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.
Amorim joined Man Utd from Portuguese club Sporting CP in November 2024. His contract is expected to run until 2027 with an option to extend for another year. There is no clause allowing for free termination, so United will have to pay Amorim's full salary.
At the press conference following yesterday's draw at Elland Road, Amorim hinted at internal disagreements within the team. He also referred to himself as the "manager" of Man Utd, rather than the head coach.
