British media reports indicate the decision to change managers was made before the FA Cup final. Van Gaal will leave Old Trafford regardless of whether Man Utd beat Crystal Palace at Wembley. The FA Cup was Van Gaal's last memorable moment, after months of enduring criticism from fans, Man Utd legends, and the media.
Man Utd intended to appoint Louis Van Gaal as Technical Director to support Mourinho, but the Dutch coach declined.
During his two years managing Manchester United, Van Gaal spent $362 million on players, but the results were not as expected. This season, Man Utd were eliminated early from European competitions and failed to finish in the top four. His monotonous playing style also drew much criticism, particularly from former Man Utd players like Paul Scholes.

For several weeks now, Manchester United's vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been in negotiations with Mourinho's representative, Jorge Mendes. Manchester United wants to wait until the season is completely finished before announcing a change of manager.
Mourinho is a manager who has already made a name for himself and could help Man Utd achieve success quickly. The "Special One" has extensive experience in both the Premier League and European competitions. However, many still doubt the Man Utd-Mourinho combination. The Portuguese strategist is not known for focusing on youth development or promoting attacking football, two characteristics that have been hallmarks of the Old Trafford club since the Alex Ferguson era.
Mourinho has been waiting for the right offer ever since being sacked by Chelsea last December.
