Manchester United overhauls squad: 5 stars face the risk of leaving Old Trafford.
Under Michael Carrick's tenure, Manchester United are preparing for a major overhaul, with at least five veteran players potentially leaving after the final round of the Premier League.
Manchester United is facing a major turning point in its squad rebuilding process under manager Michael Carrick. After a turbulent season, the final Premier League match against Brighton could be the last time five of the current stars wear the Red Devils' shirt. This personnel revolution is expected to help the team regain its former position in domestic and international competitions.
The philosophy changed and the names became outdated.
Under the new regime, Michael Carrick quickly implemented a tactical style that prioritized smooth and flexible ball circulation. This left some players who had been brought in to serve the old philosophy feeling out of place in the current system.
1. Manuel Ugarte - Lack of tactical compatibility
Once expected to bring steel and resilience to the midfield after his move from Paris Saint-Germain, Manuel Ugarte is facing an uncertain future. Despite Ineos Group's strategy of giving the new signing opportunities for two seasons, the Uruguayan midfielder has yet to make a significant impact.

In Carrick's system, a defensive midfielder like Ugarte, who is physically strong but lacks the flexibility to control the game, seems to have no place in the team. The 25-year-old's frequent absence from recent plans is a clear sign of a summer departure.
2. Altay Bayindir - Seeking a starting spot
The Turkish goalkeeper is at a crossroads in his career. After a serious mistake in the match against Arsenal, Bayindir has almost lost the trust of the coaching staff and has been constantly benched in favor of Andre Onana. With United having successfully signed Senne Lammens, Bayindir's chances of competing for a starting position are virtually nonexistent. A transfer would be the best solution for him to salvage his career.
3. Joshua Zirkzee - A disappointment in attack.
Joshua Zirkzee is a testament to the ineffectiveness of previous scouting efforts. Despite being brought in by Bologna with high expectations, the Dutch striker only managed to score a meager 9 goals in 74 Premier League appearances.

Zirkzee doesn't possess the qualities of a true center forward, nor does he have the speed to create breakthroughs when playing on the wing. His lackluster performance against Sunderland recently has further reinforced the possibility that Man Utd will soon offload the 25-year-old from Old Trafford to make room for higher-quality targets.
Cut losses and reorient the future of the defense.
Besides professional issues, financial challenges and fitness concerns are also reasons why the Red Devils' management has had to make tough decisions.
4. Mason Mount - The Injury Problem and Transfer Value
Joining from Chelsea for a fee of £53 million, Mason Mount has never truly proven his worth. Recurring injuries have limited him to just 24 appearances this season. With Man Utd prioritizing targets like Adam Wharton and Aurelien Tchouameni, Mount's position is seriously threatened. Many experts believe it's time for the Old Trafford club to cut their losses on the 27-year-old.
5. Matthijs de Ligt - Change in defensive priorities
Despite still being a top-class center-back, Matthijs de Ligt doesn't seem to be in Carrick's long-term plans. The English manager prefers the central defensive pairing of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, rather than a three-center-back formation. De Ligt's five-month injury layoff has made his fitness a major obstacle. At 26, Man Utd could still recoup a significant transfer fee from a player they bought for £43 million in 2024.
