Meta's Threads social networking app will feature web browsing and search capabilities to compete with Twitter, now Elon Musk's X.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Threads is “developing on the trajectory expected to become a vibrant app in the long term.” Accordingly, the Facebook founder said the Twitter-like social network will be updated with new features “in the next few weeks.”

Threads will be updated with features to compete directly with Elon Musk's Twitter (X).

Threads was introduced in July and quickly soared to the top of the charts amid the backlash against Twitter, now X, surrounding its owner Elon Musk.

However, the hype surrounding this new social network has been cooling down in recent weeks due to a loss of novelty, and some users have complained that the app has limited functionality.

Marketers and content creators say that to become a significant service, Threads needs features that make it easy for users to search for trending topics and previous posts. In addition, accessibility on a website is especially important if Meta truly wants to compete with X – a social network that has long been popular on desktop computers.

At the most recent earnings call, Zuckerberg expressed "optimism" about Threads' future, but said he wouldn't seek to monetize the app until it grew larger and more popular.

"We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but the team's build pace is really encouraging," said Meta's CEO.
