Morocco has officially put into operation the Barak MX multi-layered air defense missile system from Israel.

The Kingdom of Morocco has officially deployed the Barak MX missile system, becoming the latest customer of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). This move marks a turning point in the North African nation's defense capabilities and reflects Israel's increasingly important role as a strategic partner in the region.
Contract details and strategic deployment locations
According to defense sources, the agreement, worth approximately $500 million, between IAI and Morocco was signed in 2022. The first Barak MX system was delivered in 2023 and is now deployed at a newly built air defense base near Sidi Yahya El Gharb, about 60 km from the capital Rabat. This procurement is the result of lengthy negotiations as Rabat sought alternatives or supplements to systems such as the US Patriot, China's Sky Dragon 50, or France's VL MICA.
Technical analysis of the Barak MX system
Barak MX is a multi-layered, multi-purpose air defense missile system developed through a collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and the Defence Research and Development Directorate of the Israeli Ministry of Defence (DDR&D). The system's strength lies in its network-centric operational architecture, which optimizes target interception methods.
The system is capable of flexibly deploying three types of interceptor missiles on the same vertical launch system:
- Barak MRAD:Short-range missiles with a maximum target destruction range of 35 km.
- Barak LRAD:Medium-range missiles with an operational range of up to 70 km.
- Barak ER:The extended version is capable of intercepting targets at ranges up to 150 km.
Besides Morocco, the Barak MX is currently deployed by the armed forces of many countries such as Thailand, Azerbaijan, Slovenia, Cyprus, as well as the armies of Israel and India.
Defense cooperation and domestic industrialization
Since the Abraham Accords of 2020 and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation in 2021, Morocco has continuously modernized its arsenal with equipment from Israel. This portfolio includes the ATMOS self-propelled artillery system, the ELTA radar for F-5E fighter jets, and the EXTRA high-precision rockets.
Notably, Morocco is aiming to reduce its reliance on imports by building a domestic defense industry. Last September, BlueBird Aero Systems (a subsidiary of IAI) inaugurated a SpyX cruise missile production plant in Benslimane. This marks the first time advanced military UAV technology has been produced locally in North Africa, enabling precise target destruction within a 50 km range with a 2.5 kg warhead.
With a projected defense budget of approximately $19 billion by 2026, Morocco is affirming its commitment to building a modern, multi-layered defense system to address increasingly complex security challenges in the region.
