Conflict arising from land dispute leads to father and son murdering neighbor.
(Baonghean.vn) - Due to a long-standing land dispute, Dung and his son Hung murdered their neighbor after the man came to their house with a knife to "talk."
The Nghe An Provincial People's Court recently held a first-instance trial to hear the case against two defendants, Tran Xuan Hung (born in 1996) and Tran Xuan Dung (born in 1967), both residing in Nghia Dong commune, Tan Ky district, for the crime of murder.
The two defendants are father and son, and the victim is Mr. Tran Van Q. (born in 1971, a neighbor).
According to the case details, due to a long-standing land dispute, at approximately 7:15 PM on March 24, 2023, Mr. Tran Van Q. brought a sharp knife and stood in front of Tran Xuan Dung's house, cursing and threatening him.
Then, Q. entered the house, holding a knife in one hand and two billiard balls in the other, jumping onto chairs and tables to chase and attack Dung. Seeing this, several people present quickly ran away.
At this point, Mr. Dung's wife returned from the market and quickly intervened, begging Mr. Q. not to cause trouble, saying, "Let's talk things out calmly." In response, Q. threatened to kill and chase Dung away, but failed, so he returned to the yard and continued to hurl insults. Because he was being chased away, Dung grabbed a metal bar and hit Q.'s hand, causing the knife to fall.
At this point, Tran Xuan Hung (Dung's son) ran out of the kitchen with a knife and slashed Mr. Q's head. Although the victim tried to run away, Hung continued to slash him multiple times in the shoulder and back. Dung, standing nearby, added another blow to Mr. Q's body, causing the victim to collapse unconscious.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, the victim died that same evening. As for the father and son who committed the crime, Hung surrendered to the police the following afternoon.
At the trial, the two defendants confessed that a long-standing land dispute had led to conflict between the two families. Defendant Dung stated that the victim had repeatedly come to his house to cause trouble, causing resentment. On the day of the incident, the victim came to his house with a knife to start the fight, causing both of them to lose control of themselves. At the trial, the two defendants offered their apologies to the victim's family.
Following the incident, the defendant's family compensated the victim's representative with 90 million VND. At the trial, in the presence of the judges, the two families reached an agreement regarding the civil aspects and fully compensated the victim's representative for all damages.
The panel of judges determined that in this case, the defendants committed the crime while under emotional provocation caused by the victim's unlawful actions. The defendants' families had contributed to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, defendant Hung surrendered, showed remorse, and fully compensated the victim's representatives for the damages… these were considered mitigating circumstances.
Therefore, the court sentenced Tran Xuan Hung to 11 years in prison and Tran Xuan Dung to 4 years in prison for murder.
