Do Kindle e-readers need a screen protector?
Most Kindle users don't really need a screen protector thanks to the high durability of the plastic material, except in some cases where use is in a special environment.
If you've just bought a Kindle and are wondering whether or not to put a screen protector on it, the answer might surprise you. For most average users, applying a screen protector to an e-reader is generally unnecessary.

The actual durability of Kindle screens
Kindle screens are made of plastic with a very thin layer of glass underneath. Despite being plastic, they are quite durable under normal use. In fact, after using a Kindle Paperwhite from August 2020 for about 2,000 hours, after nearly five and a half years, the screen is still almost brand new, with no scratches even without a screen protector.

Most Kindle damage usually comes from strong impacts or significant physical damage rather than minor scratches from fingers. Storing the device on a bedside table, sofa, or in protective bags when traveling is usually enough to keep it in perfect condition.

When do you really need a screen protector?
Despite its high durability, there are specific cases where adding a protective layer of PET plastic is a wise decision:
- Outdoor environment:If you frequently take your Kindle to the beach (where sand can easily cause scratches) or camping trips.
- Using a stylus:For Kindle Scribe models, frequent use of the stylus can create greater pressure and friction on the surface.
- Personal characteristics:People with long fingernails or who frequently drop things.
- Families with young children:Children may accidentally draw on the screen with ink or throw the device against hard surfaces.

Phone cases: A better choice than screen protectors.
Instead of focusing too much on screen protectors (which can cause air bubbles if not applied properly), investing in a case or cover is more necessary for all Kindle users. A pouch-style or folding case can protect both the device and the screen from drops and breakage.

With a new Kindle costing between $100 and $160, spending a few dozen extra dollars on a protective case is a worthwhile investment to safeguard the device for years of use.
