In order to compete with the all-new Honda CR-V, which also uses a 1.5L turbocharged engine with nearly 200 horsepower, Mazda will take a similar but more powerful approach by using the 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine inherited from the 2016 CX-9. This engine produces a maximum power of 250 horsepower and a maximum torque of 420 Nm.
If the engine in the CX-5 retains the same specifications as in the Mazda CX-9, it will be a powerful vehicle, a good choice for customers who prioritize performance within a mainstream car. With 250 horsepower, the new generation Mazda CX-5 will have power comparable to luxury German models such as the Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI.
In addition to this 2.5L turbocharged engine, the all-new Mazda CX-5 will also reuse the older 2.0L and 2.5L engine options. Furthermore, some markets will also offer the same 2.2L diesel engine option.
Currently, the Mazda CX-5 sold in the Vietnamese market uses two traditional engine options: a 2.0L and a 2.5L, both featuring Skyactiv-G technology. Adding a turbocharged version would make it an attractive choice for customers who appreciate advanced technology.
The new generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to officially debut at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. All information and official pricing details are still being kept secret by the Japanese automaker.
