Hau was born into a farming family in Hong Phong hamlet, Luu Son commune, where his parents toiled year-round in the fields. Understanding their parents' hardships, Hau and his two siblings are all well-behaved and excellent students. Hau's eldest brother, Nguyen Van Duc, a student in class 10T1 at Do Luong I High School, consistently ranks first in his class and has been recognized as an outstanding student at the district level for many years. His younger brother, Nguyen Van Loc, a student in class 4A at Luu Son Primary School, is also frequently praised for his studious spirit.

Nguyen Thi Hau is considered a well-behaved and academically excellent student at Luu Son Secondary School.

In June 2016, Hau frequently suffered from high fevers, and when her family took her to the doctor, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Since learning of her illness, Hau has been very sad. However, fearing she would be a burden to her mother, she always tried her best in her studies. After her first course of treatment, Hau confided in her mother: "When I come home from treatment, my hair will fall out. Please buy me a wig so I can go to school and, when I grow up, I can work to support you and Dad."

Mr. Nguyen Minh Binh, Vice Principal of Doi Cung Secondary School, said: “Hau is a very well-behaved and academically gifted student. When we heard about her illness, everyone felt sorry for her. Teachers and friends at the school have raised 10 million VND to help her get treatment.”

Every 20 days after returning home, Hau has to go back to Hanoi for a month of treatment. The pain and suffering torment her parents, causing them immense heartache. After each treatment, her health deteriorates significantly. Yet, she still longs to go to school with her peers. She desperately needs the support of kind-hearted people to give her the motivation to fight her illness so that she can return to school and fulfill her dreams.
