Hau was born into a farming family in Hong Phong hamlet, Luu Son commune. His parents worked hard all year round in the fields. Understanding their parents' hardships, Hau's three siblings were all very obedient and good at studying. Hau's eldest brother, Nguyen Van Duc, a 10T1 student at Do Luong I High School, was always at the top of his class in terms of academic achievement and was an excellent student at the district level for many years in a row. His younger brother, Nguyen Van Loc, a 4A student at Luu Son Primary School, was also often praised for his learning spirit.

In June 2016, Hau often had high fevers, and his family took him to the doctor and discovered he had leukemia. Since he found out he was sick, Hau has been very sad. However, fearing that he would be a burden to his mother, he always tried to study. After the first treatment, Hau confided to his mother: "When I come back from treatment, my hair fell out. Remember to buy me a wig so I can go to school so that when I grow up, I can work and support my parents."

Mr. Nguyen Minh Binh - Vice Principal of Doi Cung Secondary School said: "Hau is a very good and studious student. When we heard that he was sick, everyone felt sorry for him. Teachers and friends at school raised 10 million VND for his treatment."

Every 20 days after returning home, Hau has to go to Hanoi for a month of treatment. The pain torments him and makes his parents feel heartbroken. After each treatment, his health gets worse. However, he still longs to go to school with his friends. He needs kind-hearted people to help him have the motivation to fight the disease so that he can go to school again and fulfill his dream.
