With just a bucket of water and a towel, you can help your air conditioner's outdoor unit cool down quickly, thereby increasing cooling efficiency and reducing your electricity bill during the summer.

The Japan Self-Defense Forces recently shared a simple solution to improve air conditioner performance by cooling the outdoor unit. This method utilizes familiar items like buckets of water and towels to reduce the operating strain on the equipment during intensely hot days.

Reasons why air conditioners consume more electricity in hot weather.

According to the Tokyo Local Cooperation Office of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, rising outdoor temperatures cause the outdoor unit to overheat. When this component cannot dissipate heat effectively, the air conditioner is forced to operate at a higher power to maintain the room temperature, leading to a surge in electricity consumption.

How to cool the outdoor unit using capillary action.

To overcome this problem, the Japanese military recommends that users utilize capillary action to cool the device naturally. Here's how to do it:

  • Step 1: Prepare a bucket filled with water and a long towel.
  • Step 2: Place the bucket of water next to the outdoor unit (do not place it directly on top of the unit).
  • Step 3: Dip one end of the towel into the bucket of water.
  • Step 4: Cover the remaining cloth over the radiator grille at the back of the outdoor unit.

Thanks to capillary action, water is continuously drawn up and spread evenly through the towel, helping to continuously lower the surface temperature of the outdoor unit. As the temperature decreases, the air conditioner will operate more stably, significantly saving energy and extending the lifespan of the device.

Important safety precautions

Although this method is very effective and easy to implement, the Japan Self-Defense Forces also issued some recommendations to avoid damaging the equipment:

  • Do not place buckets of water on the outdoor unit. This can scratch the protective paint layer or increase the risk of rust on the casing due to prolonged direct contact with water.
  • Clean up when the weather changes:During storms or strong winds, buckets and towels should be put away to prevent them from being blown away, which could cause danger or damage.
  • Periodic inspection:You should regularly check the water level in the bucket to ensure the towel is always sufficiently damp.

In the context of rising electricity costs, this simple tip is gaining attention due to its high applicability, low investment cost, and the fact that it can be implemented right at home.
