Tips for getting water out of your ears while showering.
When you swim or shower, water can easily get into your ear canal. Usually, the water will drain out naturally, but if it doesn't, trapped water can cause infection. So how do you get the water out?
Treating fluid buildup in the ear.
A persistent discomfort extending from the ear to the jaw or throat is a typical symptom of water trapped in the ear, often accompanied by hearing problems and muffled sounds.
At that time, people should avoid inserting foreign objects such as pens, fingers, cotton swabs, or ear picks into the ear canal, as this can easily damage the mucous membrane and increase the risk of ear infection. Instead, there are several safe ways to remove water from the ear:
- Pull or tug at your earlobe while tilting your head down towards your shoulder in the direction of the water. You should also try shaking your head from side to side.

- Create a vacuum by tilting your head to one side and cupping your hand tightly over your ear. By quickly straightening and then cupping your hand, the vacuum can draw water out.
- Apply a warm cloth to the ear for about 30 seconds, repeating four or five times, with a one-minute interval between each application. Lying down or tilting your head to the affected side can also help the water drain faster.

- Use a hairdryer to evaporate the water in your ear. Turn the hairdryer to the lowest setting and hold it about 30cm away from your head. Pull your earlobe down while moving the hairdryer back and forth; the stream of hot air can evaporate any trapped water.
- Mix a solution of half rubbing alcohol and half vinegar in a sterile ear drop bottle. The alcohol helps evaporate moisture, while the vinegar prevents bacterial growth. Put 3 or 4 drops of the solution into your ear. After 30 seconds, tilt your head to one side to allow any excess solution to drain out.
- Dilute the hydrogen peroxide rinse solution with water. Use 3-4 drops of the solution each time. After 2-3 minutes, tilt your head to the affected side to allow the liquid to drain out.
Note: Do not use the above ear drop methods if you have an ear infection, perforated eardrum, or otitis externa.
