Messi has his fifth season scoring 50 goals, but still loses to Ronaldo

Messi's double against Villarreal on the evening of May 6 was his 50th and 51st goal of the 2016-2017 season.

With this achievement, M10 has had the fifth season scoring at least 50 goals for Barca. The previous four seasons included 2010-2011 (53 goals), 2011-2012 (73), 2012-2013 (60) and 2014-2015 (58).

Having scored at least 50 goals for the fifth season, Messi is still far from equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's record. The Real striker has scored at least 50 goals in six seasons.

Ronaldo currently has 35 goals in the 2016-2017 season. With only five games left in the season, CR7 will find it difficult to increase his achievement to seven seasons.

Messi's teammate Luis Suarez has only had one season with at least 50 goals, the 2015-2016 season (59 goals). In the same season, M10 scored 41 goals.

In the 2016-2017 season, Messi has 35 goals in La Liga, 11 goals in the Champions League, four goals in the Copa del Rey and one goal in the Spanish Super Cup. The Argentine striker is also a strong candidate for the title of top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League.
