Messi has had his fifth season scoring 50 goals, but he's still behind Ronaldo.

Messi's brace against Villarreal on May 6th were his 50th and 51st goals of the 2016-2017 season.

With this achievement, M10 has had his fifth season scoring at least 50 goals for Barca. The four previous seasons were 2010-2011 (53 goals), 2011-2012 (73), 2012-2013 (60) and 2014-2015 (58).

Despite achieving his fifth season with at least 50 goals, Messi has yet to equal Cristiano Ronaldo's record. The Real Madrid striker has had six seasons with at least 50 goals.

Ronaldo currently has 35 goals in the 2016-2017 season. With only five matches remaining, it will be difficult for CR7 to increase his tally to seven consecutive seasons.

Messi's teammate, Luis Suarez, has only had one season with at least 50 goals, which was the 2015-2016 season (59 goals). In that same season, M10 scored 41 goals.

In the 2016-2017 season, Messi has 35 goals in La Liga, 11 in the Champions League, four in the Copa del Rey, and one in the Spanish Super Cup. The Argentine striker is also a strong contender for the top scorer title in both La Liga and the Champions League.
