"The Messi of Brazil" was brutally murdered and his body dumped in the bushes.
Brazilian football has just experienced a shock after the body of player Daniel Correa Freitas (currently playing for Sao Paulo FC) was found in the bushes in Sao Jose dos Pinhais, Paranate state, with his head nearly severed and his genitals cut off.
According to local media, a passerby discovered the mutilated body of the unfortunate young player. Sao Paulo FC, currently playing in the Brazilian First Division, announced the sad news on their Twitter account: “Sao Paulo Football Club is deeply saddened by the death of midfielder Daniel Correa Freitas. The club extends its deepest condolences to his family.”
Correa (in white shirt) was once dubbed the "Messi of Brazil" thanks to his exceptional dribbling skills. |
Although the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, according to the local newspaper Band B, Correa was "tortured." Band B quoted a police officer as saying: "Based on the condition of the body, the victim was brutally tortured. There were two deep cuts to the victim's neck, his head was almost severed, and his genitals were cut off. This road (where Correa's body was found on October 27) is rather deserted and is known for the discovery of corpses. From the evidence at the scene, it can be inferred that the young star was killed on the road and then his body was dragged about 30 meters before being thrown into the bushes."
The news has caused widespread grief in Brazilian football, as the 24-year-old attacking midfielder was once considered a promising star for the national team. He was nicknamed "Daniel Messi" for his exceptional dribbling skills, attracting the attention of many major clubs in the country.
