Michael Carrick and personnel mistakes led to Man Utd's defeat against Newcastle.
Michael Carrick's decision to bring on Tyrell Malacia in the final minutes proved costly for Man Utd, even though he still had four more viable defensive options at his disposal.
In the 90th minute at St James' Park, Manchester United's defensive fragility was brutally exposed. Michael Carrick, in an attempt to salvage a point against a 10-man Newcastle side, made a controversial substitution, bringing on Tyrell Malacia. The result was a narrow defeat, but one that left many questions about the manager's ability to manage his players at such a crucial moment.
The failed gamble named Tyrell Malacia
The fact that Tyrell Malacia remains in the Manchester United squad until March 2026 is already a big surprise. After a summer on the transfer list that went unfulfilled, the Dutch defender had become virtually surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. Before coming on as a substitute for Noussair Mazraoui in the 85th minute against Newcastle, Malacia had only played a mere two minutes since Boxing Day.
The serious lack of ball control was immediately exploited. In the 90th minute, in a one-on-one situation, Malacia was easily beaten by William Osula after a basic dribble, leading to the decisive goal. This mistake not only cost Man Utd the points but also highlighted Carrick's poor preparation in selecting his replacements.
The abandoned steel shields from the academy.
Instead of putting faith in a player lacking sharpness, Carrick could certainly utilize young talents who are in good form. The first name that comes to mind is Ayden Heaven. This young center-back possesses a natural left foot and his tenacity was proven in the previous win against Crystal Palace. Heaven's reliability and hunger are definitely what Man Utd need more in the context of the late-game pressure.
Furthermore, Godwill Kukonki's absence is also regrettable. Despite his background as a center-back, Kukonki has frequently played as a left-back at youth levels this season, possessing impressive physical fitness and technical skills. Carrick's decision to overlook a player in good form in favor of someone who hasn't played at the highest level for a long time is difficult to justify from a professional standpoint.
Tactical solutions and secret cards
From a tactical standpoint, Man Utd have no shortage of more flexible options. Amad Diallo, who previously played as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim, could easily drop deeper to support the defense when Newcastle are down to ten men. Combining Amad with bringing Tyler Fletcher on to reinforce the midfield would provide Man Utd with a more solid defensive line, rather than a direct but ineffective positional change.
Finally, Diego Leon's case raises many questions. The Paraguayan international, despite having just played for the U21 team, has maintained regular training with the first team. Compared to an unstable Malacia side, Leon inspires a much greater sense of reliability in terms of form. The defeat against Newcastle was not just a loss in terms of the scoreline, but also a valuable lesson for Michael Carrick on placing his trust wisely in a demanding league like the Premier League.
