Wild jackfruit 'overcome the sun' to attract buyers

These days, the jackfruit garden of Mr. Tran Nguyen Tri's family in the mountainous commune of Quynh Thang (Quynh Luu) is ripening, and traders from all over are coming to buy in large quantities. Currently, in Mr. Tri's hill garden, there are more than 350 native jackfruit trees, of which nearly 100 are bearing fruit.

According to Mr. Tri, jackfruit bears fruit around mid-spring and ripens in summer, around June - August DL. For over a week now, many traders have come to buy jackfruit, the selling price at the garden is from 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg; on average, Mr. Tri sells about 1 - 1.5 tons of jackfruit per day, earning 1 - 1.5 million VND.

"Jackfruit is a fruit tree that is popular with people. When it's time to harvest, families don't need to pick it to sell, traders come to their homes to buy it. Therefore, the output is easy, no need to worry about backlog" - Mr. Tri said.

Currently, jackfruit is not grown as widely as in previous years because people cut it down to switch to other crops. Mainly, households in mountainous communes are still maintaining and developing the native jackfruit variety such as Quynh Luu, Nghia Dan, Quy Hop districts...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa in Son Hai commune (Quynh Luu) said: "During the jackfruit season, I often contact in advance some households that grow a lot of jackfruit in Nghia Binh and Nghia Loc communes (Nghia Dan) to come and buy. Every day, I buy and transport about 2 - 3 tons of jackfruit downstream, then distribute and sell it all within the day."

Currently, the import price for retail outlets is 20,000 VND/kg. Through the hands of traders, jackfruit is sold at a higher price, depending on the type, such as honey jackfruit, wet jackfruit, chewy jackfruit... Local jackfruit varieties are fragrant and sweet, so they are favored by customers...

"Currently, delicious, chewy jackfruit sold in the markets costs 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, sweet jackfruit costs 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg" - Ms. Huong, a jackfruit seller in Giat market said.
