No longer having to cut down trees or venture deep into the forest to find the succulent "forest bounty" hidden within palm fronds, people in Co Muong village, Chau Kim commune (Que Phong district, Nghe An province) are now raising palm weevils commercially at home.

In the small backyard, nearly 300 plastic pots are neatly arranged under a canopy. This is the palm weevil breeding "farm" of Mrs. Lo Thi Cuong and Mr. La Cong Thao in Co Muong village, Chau Kim commune (Que Phong district). Photo: TP

Accordingly, after mating, the rhinoceros ants are placed in a bowl of food that has been mixed in the right proportions, consisting of finely ground sugarcane, green bananas, fresh cassava, and cornmeal, to lay their eggs. Photo: TP

After a few days, the young palm weevils hatch, and they begin to burrow into the food layer, feeding continuously and growing very quickly in the stable, cool, and humid environment of each breeding container. Photo: TP

At about 3 weeks old, palm weevils reach a large size, with a plump body and a characteristic pale yellow color. This is the stage where they have the highest nutritional value – they are fatty, rich in protein. (Photo: TP)

Palm weevils are currently selling for up to 200,000 VND/kg, but supply still doesn't meet demand. With a steady yield of one harvest per month, after deducting expenses, the model provides a stable profit of 50-70 million VND per year. Photo: KL

Large, healthy palm weevils are selected separately and raised further for breeding. This selection process requires meticulous attention to detail, aiming to preserve good genetic resources and improve the quality of subsequent generations. Photo: TP

From this cocoon, an ant will emerge, becoming a king ant. This closed, natural life cycle allows breeders to proactively manage their breeding stock. Photo: KL

Despite the low investment cost, requiring only plastic containers and local food sources, raising palm weevils requires meticulous care at every stage: from adjusting humidity and temperature to cleaning the containers. Therefore, this model remains rare. (Photo: TP)
