China strongly condemned North Korea's nuclear test, harshly criticizing Pyongyang for ignoring international opposition to its nuclear weapons program.

On its official website, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying that the government expresses its firm opposition and strongly condemns Pyongyang's actions.

On the same day, South Korea pledged to push for the strongest and newest sanctions from the United Nations Security Council to completely isolate Pyongyang.

Experts and South Korean government agencies have offered differing assessments of the power of the device that North Korea claims is a hydrogen bomb, also known as a thermonuclear bomb.

The South Korean Meteorological Agency believes the bomb's explosive power is 5-6 times greater than the nuclear test conducted by North Korea a year ago.

The Korea Herald quoted Kim Young-woo, a lawmaker and chairman of the National Defense Committee of the South Korean National Assembly, as describing its power as "more potent than the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in Japan. Four to five times stronger."

Kim Dong-yub, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, estimated the bomb contained approximately 60-80 kilotons.

Park Jung-jin, a researcher at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies, said: "It seems North Korea is once again making it clear that it wants to be recognized as a nuclear-armed state."

In a related development, Russian observers said radiation levels in the country's Far East remained "normal" after North Korea announced it had tested a hydrogen bomb.

According to information and social media accounts, North Korea's nuclear test was widely felt in northeastern China, shaking several cities in the country for eight seconds.
