"IS no longer occupies any area in Mosul. The militants had no choice but to surrender. The presence of IS in Iraq has ended forever," the television channel quoted a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Defense.
"The false state has fallen: the al-Nuri Mosque has been liberated," blared red lettering scrolled through the live broadcast on Iraqi television, showing a close-up of the mosque with the Iraqi flag flying atop it. There was no commentary, only the expressive sound of Iraqi folk music.
Sky News Arabia, citing a reporter on the scene, reported that there was a split within IS ranks, and that only five fighters from the terrorist group participated in the fighting around the mosque.
