A woman used a 'love trap' to swindle billions of dong from three young men.
A woman in Da Nang used a fake name and created romantic relationships with three young men to borrow money, which she then embezzled.
On the afternoon of May 24th, following the first-instance trial, the Da Nang City People's Court sentenced defendant Lu Thi Thu Thuy (born in 1986, residing in Hoa Xuan ward, Cam Le district) to 11 years in prison for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
According to the indictment, Lu Thi Thu Thuy used the alias "Hoang Ha Vi" and posed as an English teacher to build relationships and swindle money from many young men.
Specifically, starting in March 2020, Mr. Nguyen Van D. (31 years old, from Quang Nam) met Thuy through friends and developed feelings for her.
From then on, Thuy repeatedly told false stories to borrow money from Mr. D, totaling over 31 million VND. Thuy spent all of this money on personal expenses.
Around this time, Thuy used social media to falsely claim she would introduce Mr. Do Van T. (32 years old, from Quang Nam) to a friend named Huynh Ngoc Hong from Kon Tum, who had a Facebook account named "Huynh Hong".
Later, Thuy used the "Huynh Hong" account to make friendly remarks, establish a romantic relationship with Mr. T, and then used various excuses to borrow money from him.
From March to September 2020, Thuy used the name "Huynh Hong" and gave false reasons to borrow nearly 300 million VND from Mr. T.
All the money that Mr. T. transferred to the bank accounts provided by "Huynh Hong" was then transferred by Thuy to an account under the name Lu Thi Thu Thuy.
Furthermore, during the aforementioned period, Thuy claimed she couldn't get a replacement bank card, so Mr. T. gave her a bank card containing 252.2 million VND and 20.7 million VND in cash. Thuy then withdrew all the money from the account to spend.
In February 2022, through social media, Thuy met and began a romantic relationship with Mr. Tran Cong H. (38 years old, residing in Da Nang City). Using the same tactic, Thuy lied, claiming she was attending a political school in Hanoi. She then fabricated various reasons to borrow over 500 million VND from Mr. H.
According to the investigating agency, the total amount of money Thuy embezzled from the three victims was over 1.1 billion VND.
In this case, Thuy committed the crime with aggravating circumstances, namely committing the crime two or more times. At the trial, Thuy honestly confessed to her criminal acts.
After deliberation, the panel of judges sentenced Lu Thi Thu Thuy to 11 years in prison and ordered her to continue compensating the victims for the money she had embezzled.
