Record rainfall of 1,739mm in Hue causes severe flooding at singer Long Nhat's house.
Rainfall at Bach Ma peak reached its highest level in Vietnamese history, causing severe flooding in much of Hue City. Singer Long Nhat shared a scene of him and his father struggling in their villa without electricity.
1,739mm of rainfall: A record high in history.
According to a report dated October 29th from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the rainfall measured in 24 hours at Bach Ma peak, Hue City, reached 1,739 mm. This is the highest figure ever recorded in Vietnamese history, nearly equal to the country's annual average rainfall (approximately 1,400-2,400 mm).
This figure is also considered the second largest in the world, surpassed only by the record of 1,825 mm recorded at a French observation station in the Indian Ocean in January 1966.
Hue is submerged in water.
The historic rainfall caused severe flooding in 32 out of 40 communes and wards in Hue City, lasting from October 26th. Floodwaters commonly reached 1-2 meters, with some low-lying areas experiencing depths of 3-4 meters, severely impacting the lives of residents.
Singer Long Nhật: 'Sitting next to my father in the darkness'
Sharing from his villa on Nguyen Chi Thanh Street in Hue City, singer Long Nhat said he was with his father on the second floor during a power outage. "I'm sitting next to my father in the dark. We've experienced big floods before, and we thought the floods in 2020 and 2023 were already big enough, but this year is even bigger!" he said.
The male singer said that although the rain had subsided and the water receded slowly on the morning of October 29th, it poured down heavily again in the afternoon, causing the water level to rise again and submerge the entire ground floor. He shared: "The water rose so quickly that it almost flooded my mother's altar. Luckily, we were quick to move my father, my mother's altar, and some important belongings upstairs."
My heart goes out to the people in the flood-affected areas.
According to Long Nhat, his family and many people in Hue have experience in dealing with floods and have prepared food supplies to survive. However, he still feels heartbroken when he looks towards the working-class neighborhood behind his house, where many small traders and workers are submerged in water.
"This situation is terrible for the people of Hue in particular and Central Vietnam in general. Hue has been hit so hard this year! Behind me is a working-class neighborhood... submerged in a vast sea of water, it's heartbreaking and distressing," he expressed.
The male singer said that what he hopes for most right now is for the rain to stop to avoid a situation of "flooding on top of flooding." He also affirmed that after the water recedes, he will join hands with everyone to overcome the consequences and help those in difficult circumstances in the local area.
