This peanut harvest has not brought much joy to the people of Chau Nhan commune (Hung Nguyen district), as the crop has failed and yields are low.

Những ngày này, bà con các xã vùng hạ lưu sông Lam thuộc huyện Hưng Nguyên đang thu hoạch lạc. Người dân địa phương chủ yếu dùng trâu bò cày vỡ đất và dùng sức người rũ lấy cây lạc. In mid-June, people here only begin plowing and harvesting peanuts... Local people mainly use buffaloes and cows to plow the land and use human labor to shake the soil and remove the peanut roots. Anh Võ Văn Quế - hộ dân trồng lạc nhiều ở xóm Phú Xuân cho biết: Năm nay, lạc mất mùa, củ ít, không chắc. Nhà anh trồng 6 sào lạc, năm trước được khoảng 1,2 tấn lạc khô, nhưng vụ này chỉ được tầm một nửa hoặc hơn xíu. My family planted 6 sao (approximately 0.6 hectares) of peanuts. Last year, we got 50 bags of dried peanuts (about 1.2 - 1.3 tons), but this season, after drying and packaging, we only got 20 bags." Sau khi thu hoạch lạc, bà con xã Châu Nhân thường trồng các loại đậu (đậu xanh, đậu đen) và vừng. Kinh nghiệm nhiều năm cho thấy, trước khi cày lạc, bà con thường ra giống đậu. Lúc nhặt hết lạc, chỉ cần dùng trâu bò bừa qua để làm phẳng và sạch mặt ruộng là xong. Based on years of experience, before plowing the peanut fields, they sow the bean seeds. Để tách củ lạc từ bụi lạc, người dân địa phương thường đập gốc lạc lên thành xe bò lốp, lên hộp gỗ có gắn lưới phía sau, hay đập lên thanh gỗ kê trên miệng thùng phi. Khi đi thu hoạch lạc, bà con thường chở dụng cụ đập lạc ra đồng. My family cultivates 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of peanuts; last year we got about 5-6 quintals of dried peanuts, but this year, due to the crop failure, we'll only get 3-4 quintals at most." Người dân địa phương cho rằng, đập lạc lấy củ ở ngoài đồng khá nhanh gọn. Đập xong đóng lạc củ vào bì chở về nhà phơi. In my opinion, the crop failure is due to several reasons: Firstly, the old peanut variety has degenerated; secondly, the planting method is not properly rotated, peanuts are planted continuously; and thirdly, the weather is unfavorable..."
