Penalties for not having mirrors on a motorcycle in 2026
Hoa went to the supermarket and accidentally had her right rearview mirror stolen by a thief, while the left mirror was missing. Because she was in a hurry to get home, Hoa continued driving. After a short distance, she got off and walked because she was worried about being fined and having points deducted from her driver's license if she encountered traffic police, according to the new regulations in 2026. This is a concern of Ms. Nguyen Thi H. (Hai Loc commune, Nghe An province).
Reply:Clause 1, Article 14 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP stipulates the penalties and deduction of points from the driver's license of drivers of motorcycles, mopeds, and similar vehicles who violate regulations on vehicle conditions when participating in traffic as follows:
1. A fine of between 400,000 VND and 600,000 VND shall be imposed for any of the following violations:
a) Driving a vehicle without a horn; license plate light; brake lights; left rearview mirror, or with these but they are not functioning;
b) Driving a vehicle without turn signals, or with turn signals that are not functioning;
c) Driving a vehicle without headlights (low beam or high beam) or with headlights that are not functioning or do not meet design standards;
d) Driving a vehicle without a braking system, or with a braking system that is not functioning or does not meet technical standards;
d) Drive the vehicle with the headlights facing towards the rear.
Therefore, motorcyclists who operate motorcycles without rearview mirrors or with malfunctioning rearview mirrors will be fined between 400,000 and 600,000 VND. However, only the absence of a left rearview mirror will be subject to this penalty.
