On May 20, just after 7am, the yard of Mr. Bui Van Quang (60 years old) in Block 9, Cau Giat town (Quynh Luu district) was almost full of people, with messy belongings to prepare for the journey of "inpatient treatment" here. Since Mr. Quang started advertising loudly that he could cure diseases with "free water", his neighbors said that in recent days, the number of people coming to this house has increased.

“You can find out for yourself, but I don’t believe it. I only know that recently, sick people have been coming in and out constantly, and there are always dozens of people in that house,” said a neighbor of Mr. Quang.

According to the reporter's records, inside the yard, almost every corner had patients lying around, looking tired and haggard. Next to them were 20-liter oxygen tanks lying around. Many patients came from far away provinces, some from Quang Binh, some from Ha Tinh... They seemed to lie down anywhere they could on the porch of Mr. Quang's house.

Many people were lucky enough to lie on convenient folding beds, some on bamboo cots, and about 5 patients were arranged to rest on temporary wooden boards right next to the fence. Sitting next to them were relatives who came along to take care of them. What these patients had in common was that they all had jugs of filtered water next to them, which they continuously took turns drinking, drinking to…. Not only were there patients who were being “treated in the hospital”, many others had just arrived, and there was no place to sit, so they had to put on slippers and sit on the ground in the yard waiting for their turn to be consulted by the homeowner.

A 42-year-old patient from Tuyen Hoa district (Quang Binh province) said that this is the 28th day that he and his father have packed up and come to Mr. Quang's house to be treated with water. He said that he has late-stage thyroid cancer. Although he has been drinking water here for nearly a month, and it is not clear whether his health has improved or not, this man still believes in this treatment method. "This is because after I discovered the disease, I had undergone chemotherapy several times, so when I switched to this treatment method, it took longer. If I had discovered the disease, not taken medicine, not intervened, and come here for treatment, I would have been cured. Hopefully, in the coming days, my tumors will disappear," said this patient with a sad face and a skinny body.

Lying next to this person is a 62-year-old man from Ky Anh district (Ha Tinh). He said that he had a tumor, after being examined, he did not seek treatment at the hospital, but was brought here by his daughter-in-law to be treated with water. During the 3 days at this house, he did not eat anything, only continuously drank water from the homeowner's water filter. "Drinking a lot of water is also very uncomfortable, but I have to try to see. I don't know if I will get better," he said.

Meanwhile, behind the house, in a small room, Mr. Bui Van Quang is still busy "treating" many people. Because he is too busy, many patients have to wait in line, the reporter was received by his wife, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa, and instructed on this treatment method. Mrs. Hoa said that as long as you are not too weak and can still walk, any disease will come. Especially for those who have not used Western medicine. "When you come here for treatment, you actually just drink fresh alkaline ionized water from my water filter. Patients do not eat anything, drinking this water will not make them hungry anymore", Mrs. Hoa said and informed that, in terms of cost, each patient will have to pay 200,000 VND/day, which is the amount of money called sanitation, electricity and water. As for accompanying relatives, because they do not need to drink alkaline ionized water, they only have to pay 100,000 VND/day if they want to stay. That is not including the cost of renting beds, blankets, etc.

“If you have blankets, please take them away. If not, I will rent them out. There are many people with cancer who just left yesterday. Some people drink 8 to 10 liters of water like that every day. The more you drink, the faster you recover,” said Ms. Hoa.

Lock the gate, lock the inspection team

Not only did he put up a billboard advertising “water treatment” in front of his house, on his personal Facebook account, Mr. Quang also often live-streamed images of many people he introduced as patients with severe cancer, terminal cancer, who were sent home from the hospital. After that, he continuously showed off that the patients had recovered or had positive changes in their health after following his “water treatment” method…

Mr. Quang said he learned the water treatment method from Mr. Nguyen Tien Nam (living in Binh Minh commune, Thanh Oai, Hanoi), then returned to treat people in need. He also admitted that he treated people at his home without any documents and without permission from any agency.

Mr. Le Sy Thanh - Chairman of Cau Giat Town People's Committee said that after understanding the situation, the locality assigned the town police to invite Mr. Quang to work. Here, Mr. Quang also could not present any documents related to medical treatment. According to Mr. Thanh, Mr. Quang had never done anything related to the medical industry before, only doing business and construction.

On May 16, the town People's Committee established an inspection team led by the Vice Chairman of the town People's Committee to inspect Mr. Quang's water treatment facility. "During the inspection and record-making process, Mr. Quang was not at home, only his wife and children were present. However, the family refused to cooperate with the inspection team. At the same time, the family locked the gate, preventing the inspection team from leaving. Only later did the family open the gate to let the team leave," the report of the Cau Giat town People's Committee stated, and at the same time proposed that the Quynh Luu district People's Committee establish an interdisciplinary inspection team to inspect and handle this case.

Talking about this treatment method, Dr. Nguyen Duc Phuc - Head of the Intensive Care Department - Nghe An General Hospital affirmed that drinking too much normal water such as filtered water or boiled water left to cool in 1 day, even for healthy people, is very dangerous, can cause water poisoning such as edema, pulmonary edema, blood dilution, hyponatremia, cerebral edema, coma, convulsions and death, not to mention using large amounts of alkaline water. Drinking too much alkaline water not only causes excess water but also changes the pH of the blood, causing metabolic alkalosis.

“The body’s blood environment has a stable pH of 7.35-7.45. This index allows many substances in the body to move and function, helping with absorption and metabolism reactions… When there is a change in the pH of the blood, the body will be disrupted and harmful to health. Drinking too much alkaline water will cause the body’s pH to increase, causing sensory disturbances, coma, hypokalemia, which can lead to arrhythmia, paralysis, and even death,” Dr. Phuc warned.

According to Dr. Nguyen Duc Phuc, when suspecting illness, people need to visit specialized medical facilities; absolutely do not arbitrarily drink too much of any type of water to avoid endangering the body. Authorities also need to increase warnings, investigate and strictly handle establishments that advertise falsely, endangering people's health.
