Washington officials asserted that this military move was a direct response to allegations that Iran had targeted three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement on social media, the Central Command emphasized that it had begun taking strong countermeasures in response to actions threatening freedom of navigation in this vital waterway.
Despite the ongoing military actions, Washington appears to be keeping diplomatic channels open with Tehran. Citing an unnamed US official, The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials still hope to continue negotiations to reach a final agreement.
This source confirms that the US considers Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz completely unacceptable and requires a strong response. However, alongside military sanctions, the desire to maintain dialogue toward a comprehensive diplomatic solution remains a crucial part of the US strategy.
On Tehran's side, senior officials immediately voiced strong opposition to Washington's military action. Speaking to the Fars news agency, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi declared that the US attack on Iran was a blatant violation of the first and second articles of the Islamabad Memorandum of Cooperation.
The diplomat further emphasized that, over the past three weeks, the US has repeatedly violated the terms agreed upon in this memorandum of understanding. Military maneuvers and tough statements exchanged between the two countries continue to put the region on high alert for security.
