US-Iran talks are gearing up, while Israel and Lebanon reach a historic turning point?
Shuttle diplomacy efforts are yielding positive signals amidst the still volatile Middle East situation. The possibility of resuming peace talks between the US and Iran is wide open, alongside the recent agreement between Israel and Lebanon to begin direct dialogue.
Opportunities to resume US-Iran negotiations
US President Donald Trump said peace talks between Washington and Tehran could resume as early as this week. Speaking to The New York Post, Trump revealed that a new round of talks could take place in Pakistan "within the next two days."
This move comes after reports that Iranian officials had proactively contacted the authorities in an attempt to reach an agreement.
At the heart of any diplomatic effort between the U.S. and Iran today remains the deep disagreement over Tehran's nuclear program. Washington has reportedly demanded that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment program for 20 years, while Tehran has only proposed a five-year moratorium, which has been rejected by the U.S.
The two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran remains in effect, creating an important foundation for negotiation efforts. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that there is "no military solution" to the current conflict, and called on all parties to demonstrate "persistent engagement and political will."
Senior sources from Pakistan have also confirmed that Islamabad is working to mediate and bring the US and Iran back to the negotiating table for a second round of talks.
On another note, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was ready to support the safe storage of Iran's enriched uranium as part of a peace agreement.
Diplomatic progress between Israel and Lebanon
At the same time, a rare diplomatic breakthrough occurred when Israel and Lebanon agreed to hold direct talks following a meeting in Washington. This was the first direct high-level talks between the two countries, which have been officially at war for decades, since 1993.
The meeting was mediated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with the participation of the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the US. The US State Department assessed the discussions as "productive" and the parties agreed to begin in-person negotiations at a time and place to be agreed upon.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed hope that the talks would "mark the beginning of an end to the suffering of the Lebanese people." Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad described the meeting as "constructive" and stressed that a ceasefire was the top priority.
Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter stated that the two countries share the goal of liberating Lebanon from Hezbollah control. Israel currently controls several areas in southern Lebanon and firmly rejects any ceasefire unless Hezbollah is eliminated.
Notably, Hezbollah strongly opposed these negotiations. As soon as the meeting in Washington began, the armed group launched rockets at more than a dozen towns in northern Israel.
Increased economic pressure
Despite diplomatic progress, the U.S. continues to increase pressure on Iran through a maritime blockade. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that these measures apply to "ships of all nations entering and leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas."
The Iranian military command called the blockade an "act of piracy" and warned of strong retaliatory measures against the Strait of Hormuz.
China also criticized the lockdown as "dangerous and irresponsible."
Alongside military pressure, the US Treasury Department confirmed it will not extend the temporary easing of sanctions on Iranian oil.
Positive diplomatic signals immediately impacted global markets. Stock markets rallied across the board on expectations of an agreement to end the war and reopen vital shipping lanes.
International crude oil prices also saw a cooling down: North Sea Brent crude fell to $94.79 per barrel, while WTI crude retreated to $91.28 per barrel.
Observers believe that the situation in the Middle East in the coming days will depend heavily on the outcome of these parallel dialogue efforts. Foreign ministers from 17 countries, including the UK and France, have unanimously called on all parties to seize this golden opportunity to bring lasting security and peace to the region.
