South Korean news agency Yonhap reported this information on February 26, citing sources from the country's Ministry of Defense.
According to Yonhap, South Korea hopes to secure a site for this purpose in Seongju County, 296 kilometers south of Seoul, next week.
Initially, the plan by the US and South Korea is to use land from Lotte Golf Club in exchange for land elsewhere to replace the site used for a military base.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense explained that it is currently surveying the potential impacts of THAAD on the environment in Seongju County.
If the plan goes ahead, South Korea would be the first country where the U.S. deploys THAAD outside of its territory.
The THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system is designed for interceptor missiles with a range of no more than 200km.
According to an agreement signed between South Korea and the United States in mid-2016, the THAAD system will be deployed in South Korea in 2017.
The South Korean presidential office stated that the decision to deploy the US THAAD missile defense system in South Korea is for self-defense, to protect national security and the lives of its citizens against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
Officials from the Presidential Office emphasized that Pyongyang's increased nuclear and missile threats are a matter of survival for the country and people of South Korea.
