US points out 'unacceptable' mistakes related to Russia
(Baonghean.vn) - In the event of successful negotiations on security guarantees, the West seems to be risking recreating Russia's exclusive sphere of influence in the Eurasian region, US Colonel Wes Martin wrote in an article for National Interest magazine.

The author of the article notes that Moscow's initiative is aimed at protecting its own security, however, the expert believes that it can significantly increase the country's influence on the aforementioned intercontinental region.
"These demands are apparently made to protect Moscow, but accepting them could lead to the West abandoning the former Soviet states and recreating an exclusive Russian sphere of influence from the Black and Baltic Seas to the Pacific Ocean. This is unacceptable and must be rejected," Martin said. Instead, the officer proposed supporting Ukraine's military reforms and financial aid.
Earlier in a major year-end press conference, Russian President Putin reiterated that the US is deploying missiles near Russia's borders, but Moscow does not do this near the US border, so it does not see anything redundant in the request "not to deploy any attack systems near our homes".
Last week, Russia published draft agreements on security guarantees with the United States and with NATO member states. Specifically, the documents propose provisions on mutual security guarantees in Europe, not deploying medium- and short-range missiles within range of each other and abandoning further NATO expansion, including the former Soviet republics.
