Specifically, Raytheon is collaborating with Mitsubishi Electric, while Lockheed is partnering with Fujitsu on the aforementioned project. The purpose of the project is to expand the range of Japan's maritime radar detection and targeting system. Other sources indicate that "Japan hopes the Aegis Ashore missile defense system will be operational by 2023 at the latest."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Japan's Ministry of Defense said that Tokyo currently has no concrete plans for cooperation with Washington on the Aegis radar system.

Previously, other sources indicated that, in the context of North Korea, a nuclear-armed nation, developing increasingly sophisticated missiles capable of striking any target in Japan, Tokyo was likely to invest in a land-based version of the Aegis defense system deployed on warships in the Sea of Japan.

Japan hopes to make a final decision on deploying the Aegis system on land this year. The country is also considering deploying the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system.
