The US is testing a jet engine for the PrSM missile with a range of 1,000km.
Lockheed Martin has completed testing of a ramjet engine for the PrSM Increment 4 missile, increasing its range to over 1,000km and ensuring full compatibility with the HIMARS system.
Lockheed Martin and L3Harris have just made a significant breakthrough in the development of the next-generation Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). The Direct Connect Transfer test demonstrated the ability to seamlessly transfer control from the solid-fuel rocket engine to the ramjet propulsion system on the PrSM Increment 4 variant.

Dual-mode propulsion technology
Tests conducted on a ground-based test stand operated by L3Harris confirmed the stability of the new propulsion system. The integration of ramjet technology allows the rocket to maintain high speed over significantly longer distances compared to traditional solid-fuel engines. Flight tests for the PrSM Increment 4 are scheduled to begin this fall.
Notably, thanks to its dual-mode engine design, this missile is fully compatible with existing M142 HIMARS and M270 launchers. This allows the US military to optimize its logistical infrastructure without making costly modifications to the mobile launcher system.
Elevating the strategic offensive
Although the U.S. War Department initially required a minimum range of approximately 800km, Lockheed Martin claims the upgraded engine will allow the PrSM Increment 4 to exceed 1,000km. This capability enables ballistic-level precision strikes against high-value targets deep within enemy territory.
Technically, if deployed, the PrSM Increment 4 could cover vast areas from flexible deployment locations. However, experts believe that bringing this weapon into actual service will take a long time due to the US prioritizing replenishing its own strategic reserves.
Variants of the PrSM missile family
The PrSM missile family is currently being developed in five main variants serving different combat purposes:
- PrSM Increment 1:The basic version has a range of 500km.
- PrSM Increment 2:Specifically designed for anti-ship missions.
- PrSM Increment 3:Focus on testing and optimizing different types of warheads.
- PrSM Increment 4:Using ramjet engines to achieve a range of over 1,000km.
- PrSM Increment 5:A variant specifically designed for unmanned launch platforms.
Supply challenges
Despite the technology's proven effectiveness, the scarcity of the PrSM missile remains a major issue. In recent military campaigns, notably the one against Iran, the US military is believed to have significantly depleted its existing stockpile. This demonstrates the system's sophistication but also highlights the pressure on the production lines for this new generation of weapons.
