The US continues to escalate sanctions against the Cuban leadership.
The US government has just announced new sanctions targeting Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and his family members, as well as relatives of former President Raul Castro. In response to this pressure, Havana affirmed that it will not back down and emphasized the solidarity of its people.
On June 4th (US time), Washington announced its latest sanctions, marking a significant escalation in its campaign to increase pressure on its neighbor. The sanctions list includes the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces and several other entities. Specifically, the measures target President Miguel Diaz-Canel, his wife and stepson, as well as the son and grandson of former President Raul Castro.
Despite Cuba having been subject to a US trade embargo since 1962, President Donald Trump has in recent months intensified measures to blockade and cut off its fuel supply.
Earlier last year, Washington also imposed a travel ban on President Diaz-Canel and his family.
Responding to the moves from Washington, Cuban President Diaz-Canel strongly affirmed on social media platform X that his country would stand firm against "the belligerence and irrationality of the US administration." Sharing this view, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez criticized the sanctions as "terrible," emphasizing that these pressures would only be met with "even greater unity and determination from the Cuban people."
