US Air Force Commander, Lieutenant General Charles Brown, stated: “The deployment of B-52s to the Middle East demonstrates America’s determination to maintain sustained pressure on ISIS and to protect areas we may regain control of in the future.”

Lieutenant Colonel Chris Karns, spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, said he could not provide the exact number of B-52s deployed to the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar due to "military secrecy reasons."

General Brown stated that the bombers could supply weapons to ground forces and perform a range of missions, including strategic strikes, deterring enemy air forces, and maritime operations.

Lieutenant Colonel Karns stated that the B-52 aircraft used on this occasion was primarily for the purpose of resupplying weapons in the combat zone.

"Accuracy is extremely important in this fight," Karns said. "Carpet bombing won't be effective because ISIS operates in small groups. They often blend in with civilians in populated areas. The U.S. military always chooses to minimize civilian casualties."
