The refusal of Washington and its allies to support a compromise draft resolution on Syria shows that these countries do not want to see a real investigation into the alleged chemical attack in the country, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Nebenzya said on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, the rejection of this resolution is a signal of many things. This is alarming for us,” he said. “We have presented a completely clear resolution, which is almost on par with the resolution from Sweden the other day.”

“I am trying to figure out, between the lines of this resolution, where did the US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley find our tricks and schemes,” he continued.

“The fact that this resolution was not adopted shows, unfortunately, that our American partners and their allies do not need any real investigation,” he said. “We regret that this resolution was not adopted, although we sincerely hope that the fact-finding mission will soon arrive in Syria and will work to fulfill its direct mandate – to find out the truth about what happened in Douma.”

“The Russian military and the Government of the Syrian Republic will support this delegation with the view that they will ensure its security,” he added.

Commenting on the statements of the US and British ambassadors, Nebenzya said: “The threats that are being made to Syria make us cautious, because we may be on the verge of very serious and sad events.”

“Once again, I would like to ask all of them to refrain from carrying out the plans for Syria that they may be plotting,” the Russian diplomat added.

On April 10, the United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution on investigating the suspected chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma, prepared by Sweden and supported by Russia. The draft resolution was supported by five countries, including Sweden and Russia. Four other member states, including the US and the UK, voted against it. Six countries abstained./.
