'America is in conflict with itself'
(Baonghean.vn) - The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that the confrontation between the Democratic and Republican parties in the US could lead to a full-scale civil war.
Speaking to RT and TASS news agencies last weekend, Medvedev said there was a “major rift within the elite” in the United States. “It is a conflict between conservative Republicans and liberals, represented by the Democratic Party, which has really divided America.”
“The United States is currently in a state of internal conflict. The United States is in conflict with itself,” Medvedev argued. “Furthermore, in my view, this conflict is, in a certain respect, irreconcilable. Such internal conflicts often end in a civil war.” He added: “I don’t know what will happen in the United States, but the current level of conflict is high.”
Medvedev noted the ongoing criminal prosecution against former President Donald Trump, who is seeking the Republican Party nomination to run against incumbent President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election. Medvedev stated that the charges against Trump were brought “not for the sake of justice, but to prevent Trump from participating in the election.”
When asked whether there were similarities between the administrations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden in handling the conflict, Medvedev said there was more “pragmatism” in the Obama years. He added that Biden had been “more involved spiritually, politically and economically” in Ukraine, which had “tied his hands.”
Medvedev emphasized: "Biden's determination to support Kyiv against Russia has turned him into a 'hostage of Ukraine,' which is very regrettable for both Ukraine and the United States."
