(Baonghean.vn) - According to a representative of the Nghe An Provincial Police, Nghe An province discovered and arrested 1,241 cases involving 4,570 individuals for gambling in 2016.

On the morning of December 1st, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council held a review of the report on the situation and results of crime prevention and law enforcement in 2016, and the key tasks and directions for 2017.

Comrade Phan Duc Dong - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Internal Affairs Department, and Head of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council - chaired the meeting. Also present were Comrade Hoang Viet Duong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council, and representatives from many relevant agencies.

Comrade Hoang Viet Duong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council - suggested that the report on the situation and results of crime prevention and law enforcement in 2016, and the key tasks for 2017, should include an assessment of the quality of the grassroots police force, including district and commune police.

Discussing the report on the situation and results of crime prevention and control in 2016, and the key tasks for 2017 presented by the Provincial Police, the delegates highly appreciated the proactive efforts of the police force in the fight against crime.

Commenting on the report's content, Comrade Hoang Viet Duong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council - suggested that the Provincial Police should add a section on government directives to the report; it should also assess the number of case files returned by the Court and the Procuratorate compared to the previous year, as this is one of the criteria for evaluating the quality of the police force; and the report should also include an assessment of the quality of the grassroots police force, including district and commune police.

Comrade Tang Ngoc Tuan, Director of the Provincial People's Procuracy, expressed concern about the increasing use of weapons and explosives, especially in drug-related crimes and mineral exploitation.

While acknowledging the efforts of the police force in combating social evils and violations of the law, Mr. Tran Dinh Toan, from the Legal Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council, expressed concern about the large number of social evils and gambling offenses. "In 2016, the entire province detected and arrested 1,241 cases involving 4,570 individuals engaged in gambling. It is suggested that the police force should strengthen measures to prevent signs of such crimes in the future."

Regarding drug prevention and control, Ms. Thai Thi An Chung, Deputy Head of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council, commented: Propaganda materials on drug prevention and control are outdated, while the law has undergone many changes; funding for drug prevention and control in the districts is too low; and district police reported difficulties due to the lack of temporary storage facilities for evidence.

The comments and suggestions from the delegates were clarified and incorporated by Comrade Ho Van Tu, Deputy Director of the Provincial Police, to finalize the report.

Concluding this discussion, Comrade Phan Duc Dong emphasized that crime prevention is a task of particular concern to the province; he also highly appreciated the crime prevention efforts of the police force, contributing to ensuring security and order in the province.

However, the Head of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council also assessed that the situation and violations of the law remain complex, with some criminal elements showing signs of increasing. Forecasting in some localities is still slow, and state management is not strict enough; there are many potential offenders in society, especially those involved in drug trafficking.

Comrade Phan Duc Dong, Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Internal Affairs Department and Head of the Provincial People's Council's Legal Affairs Committee, assessed that the situation regarding law violations remains complex, with some criminal elements showing signs of increasing activity.

From there, Comrade Phan Duc Dong noted: The Provincial Police need to incorporate the suggestions from the delegates. Specifically, there needs to be consistency in data, clearer categorization of solutions; the continued implementation of Directive 48 of the Central Party Secretariat on strengthening the Party's leadership over crime prevention and control in the new situation; Resolution 03 of the Provincial Party Standing Committee on strengthening drug prevention and control in Nghe An province during the 2016-2020 period; and strengthened guidance to all levels, sectors, and localities to focus on crime prevention and control.

Also this morning, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council reviewed the reports of the People's Court and the People's Procuracy; the report of the Provincial People's Committee on anti-corruption work; on citizen reception and handling of complaints and denunciations in 2016 and tasks for 2017; and the report on resolving opinions and recommendations of voters before and after the 2nd session of the 17th Provincial People's Council (in the field of national security and defense).
