Nam Dinh has released former Premier League striker Percy Tau following a series of disappointing performances.

Nam Dinh FC has officially announced the termination of the contract with striker Percy Tau, one of the team's most anticipated signings this season. The former Premier League forward's premature departure is not surprising to football experts, as his contributions to the team were largely insignificant compared to the investment and his impressive personal record.

Arriving at Thien Truong Stadium as a star who had previously competed in the most exciting league on the planet, Percy Tau was expected to become a key striker. However, the actual statistics have been a major disappointment. In a total of 21 appearances across all competitions, the striker born in 1994 only played in 8 V.League matches and contributed a mere 1 goal.

Percy Tau's last appearance in the domestic league was in mid-March, in a narrow victory against Dong A Thanh Hoa. Since then, the striker has been almost invisible in coach Vu Hong Viet's tactical scheme, despite the team needing more attacking options to keep pace with the leading group.

Failure to achieve the goal of conquering the continental arena.

The Nam Dinh management initially intended to use Percy Tau as a trump card for international tournaments such as the AFC Champions League Two and the ASEAN Club Championship. However, even in these competitions, his impact remained negligible. Most notably, his lackluster performance in both legs of the regional semi-final against Selangor, where Percy Tau was given a starting opportunity but was completely neutralized, was particularly noteworthy.

The addition of Percy Tau to the V.League's second-phase squad was seen as a last-ditch effort to salvage an expensive signing, but the player's performance showed no improvement. His sluggishness and poor connection with his teammates gradually made him a burden in a team already dominated by foreign players.

Percy Tau is the fifth foreign player to leave Nam Dinh this season. This is a drastic move to streamline the team, which currently has 12 foreign players, including Lucas Alves, Caio Cesar, Njabulo Blom, Mitchell Dijks, Walber, Brenner Marlos, Kyle Hudlin, Arnaud Lusamba, Romulo, Chadrac Akolo, and Caique.

Despite significant investment in personnel, the performance of coach Vu Hong Viet's team has yet to meet fans' expectations. Currently, Nam Dinh is temporarily ranked 7th in the V.League 2025/26 standings with 31 points after 23 rounds. The early release of Percy Tau's salary is expected to help the team focus entirely on their remaining crucial goal: the National Cup semi-final against Ho Chi Minh City Police FC on June 11th.
