Vu is a first-year accounting student (Faculty of Economics, Can Tho University). He is being prosecuted for filming approximately 40 clips of 17 female students showering in order to extort money.
According to the indictment, from March to April 2015, Vu participated in a national defense education course with many other students organized by the school at Hoa An area (Hoa An commune, Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province).
At this time, Vu knew the daily routines of the female students, so he sneaked into the bathroom, placed his phone, and secretly filmed the female students while they were showering to satisfy his personal desires.
After finishing his course, Vu returned to Can Tho and, due to financial difficulties, used two social media accounts, "Minh Rock" and "Tran Minh," to befriend female students who had been filmed. He then sent them sensitive images and demanded that they transfer money to his account, threatening to release the explicit videos online if they refused.
For accounting students, Vu demanded 5 million VND, and for finance students, he demanded 6 million VND. Vu sent nude photos and coerced 17 female students into giving him money.
Upon receiving the compromising photos of themselves, the women were shocked and very worried, so they reported it to the Board of Directors of Can Tho University, and the university then notified the police.
On April 26th, Vu was arrested by the police. Vu admitted to sending messages to 17 female students, forcing them to give him 92 million VND. He said only one person had transferred 1.5 million VND, but he had only managed to withdraw 500,000 VND to spend before being arrested.
At the trial, the panel of judges stated that it was necessary to clarify whether the amount of money in Vu's account related to the extortion was still 1 million VND as Vu claimed, and therefore returned the case file for further investigation.
Reportedly, prior to the incident, Vu was described as having a gentle personality, and he was one of the students commended by the local authorities for passing the entrance exam to Can Tho University.
