According to the initial investigation: On the evening of November 3, Tinh and a group of friends went to play billiards at Thanh Truc restaurant in Ong Dong hamlet, Tan Hiep, Tan Uyen town (Binh Duong). Here, Tinh's group had a conflict with Danh Ut's group (28 years old, living in Kien Giang) because they hated each other and "looked at each other". After being stopped by nearby residents, the two sides continued playing billiards. After finishing playing, both groups left.

However, when they reached the parking lot of the billiard hall, the two groups continued to argue, leading to a fight. During the fight, Danh Ut was beaten to death by Tinh's group. After committing the crime, Tinh fled to his home in Tinh Bien district, An Giang.
