SSD Upgrade: Free Windows 11 Clone with Clonezilla

Upgrading from a traditional HDD to an SSD or NVMe is one of the most effective ways to speed up your Windows 11 computer. Instead of reinstalling the entire operating system and applications, you can clone all your data from the old drive to the new one intact using the free tool Clonezilla.

Clonezilla is a powerful open-source software that allows you to create exact copies of a drive, including the operating system, settings, applications, and files. This guide will detail the process of copying a Windows 11 hard drive to a new drive of equal or greater capacity.

Warning:This process is designed to avoid data loss on the original hard drive; however, any manipulation of the system drive carries inherent risks. Users should back up all important data before proceeding to ensure safety.

Preparation needed before copying

For the cloning process to go smoothly, you need to prepare a few tools and perform some initial setup steps. These steps include physically connecting the new hard drive and creating a bootable USB drive containing the Clonezilla software.

1. Connect the new hard drive to your computer.

First, connect your new hard drive (SSD, NVMe, or HDD) to your computer. The connection method will vary depending on the type of computer (desktop or laptop) and the type of hard drive. You may need to use a SATA cable, an M.2 slot on the motherboard, or an external hard drive enclosure that connects via USB. Refer to your computer manufacturer's documentation for the most accurate instructions.

2. Create a Clonezilla bootable USB drive.

To use Clonezilla, you need to create a bootable USB drive. The Rufus tool is recommended for its simplicity and effectiveness. You will need a USB drive with a minimum capacity of 4GB.

1. Download the Clonezilla ISO file:Access the official Clonezilla download page. Under "Select file type," choose your option.isoand press the "Download" button.
2. Download Rufus:Visit the Rufus website and download the latest version.
3. Create a USB drive using Rufus:
   
   • Run the Rufus file you just downloaded.
   • In the "Device" section, select your USB drive.
   • Press the "SELECT" button and locate the previously downloaded Clonezilla ISO file.
   • Keep all other default options and press the "START" button.

Perform a Windows 11 cloning with Clonezilla.

Once everything is ready, restart your computer and access the boot menu to select booting from the newly created Clonezilla USB drive. The key to access the boot menu is usually F1, F2, F10, F12, ESC, or Del, depending on the manufacturer.

1. When the Clonezilla menu appears, select the option.Clonezilla liveand press Enter.
2. Select your language and keyboard layout. You can keep the default settings by pressing Enter.
3. SelectStart_ClonezillaTo begin.
4. Select modedevice-device(Copy from device to device) and press Enter.
5. SelectBeginner mode(Beginner mode) to simplify the options.
6. Select an optiondisk_to_local_diskTo copy the entire local drive.
7. Select the source drive:This is the most important step. Choose the correct drive containing Windows 11 that you want to copy. Choosing the wrong drive could lead to data loss.
8. Select the destination drive:Select the new drive you want to copy the data to. All data on this drive will be erased.
9. In the next step, you can choose to skip checking/repairing the source file system.
10. Choose an action to take after completion, such as reboot or power off.
11. The system will prompt for confirmation multiple times. TypeYPress Enter to confirm that you agree to delete the data on the destination drive and begin the copying process.

The copying process will begin, and the completion time will depend on the amount of data. Once finished, you can replace the old hard drive with the new one.

Optimize your new hard drive: Expand your usable storage capacity.

If the new hard drive is larger than the old one, you need to extend the primary partition (usually drive C:) to utilize the full space. However, the Windows Recovery Partition may prevent this. You need to temporarily delete this partition, extend drive C:, and then recreate it.

Steps to reconfigure a partition

Follow these steps in a Windows environment on the new hard drive:

1. OpenCommand PromptRun as administrator.
2. Disable the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) using the command:faultc /disable
3. Launch the DiskPart tool using the command:diskpart
4. In DiskPart, use the following commands to delete the old recovery partition:
   
   • list disk(to view the list of drives)
   • select disk X(Replace X with the Windows drive number)
   • list partition(to see the list of partitions)
   • select partition Y(Replace Y with the number of the Recovery partition)
   • delete partition override
5. Use the toolDisk ManagementUse Windows Disk Management to extend the C: partition into the newly created free space. Leave approximately 1GB of free space at the end of the drive.
6. Go back to Command Prompt (with DiskPart), recreate the recovery partition, and reactivate WinRE using the following commands:
   
   • create partition primary
   • format fs=ntfs quick
   • set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac override
   • gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
   • protection(to exit DiskPart)
   • responsibility / enable
