Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told TASS news agency on April 3 that NATO's statements on the Kerch Strait sounded coordinated with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's belligerent statements with the aim of escalating the situation ahead of the second round of voting in the country.
Earlier, according to the source, NATO announced that it could take measures to ensure what the organization described as a safe passage for Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait and expand reconnaissance flights in the Black Sea region. A statement with such content was made by the US permanent representative to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison at a press conference in Washington.
“It seems that they are unilaterally coordinating with Poroshenko’s militaristic statements to escalate the situation ahead of the second round of the Ukrainian presidential election, hoping that this will help increase the ‘patriotic spirit’ of Ukrainian voters,” the Russian foreign minister said in response to a request for comment on NATO’s statement.
However, according to Mr. Karasin, the Ukrainian people are used to similar provocative moves.
