Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told TASS news agency on April 3 that NATO's statements regarding the Kerch Strait sounded like they were coordinated with belligerent statements by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, aimed at escalating tensions ahead of the second round of elections in the country.
Previously, according to the same source, NATO announced it could take measures to ensure what it described as a safe passage for Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait and expand reconnaissance flights in the Black Sea region. Such a statement was made by the US Permanent Representative to NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchison, at a press conference in Washington.
"It seems they are unilaterally coordinating with Poroshenko's militaristic statements to escalate the situation ahead of the second round of the Ukrainian presidential election, hoping that this will boost the 'patriotic spirit' of Ukrainian voters," the Russian Foreign Minister replied when asked to comment on NATO's statement.
However, according to Karasin, the Ukrainian people are accustomed to similar provocative actions.
