Stoltenberg rejected any suggestion that the incident occurred outside Türkiye's borders, while Moscow insisted its aircraft was in Syrian airspace.
Speaking at a press conference following an emergency meeting attended by all 28 NATO members at Ankara's request, Stoltenberg said: "The alliance's assessments are consistent with the information we have received from Türkiye."
Mr. Stoltenberg affirmed: "We support the territorial integrity of our allies."
The NATO Secretary General added that he expects contacts between Ankara and Moscow, and called on both sides to remain calm and de-escalate tensions in order to resolve the incident.
Türkiye is currently a key member of NATO.
