If I had one wish

(Baonghean.vn) - There's a humorous allegory about the boundless greed of humankind: If a genie appeared and granted you one wish, what would you wish for? Humans would immediately say without hesitation: "I wish for many more wishes!"

One might think that's wise, but no, in the end, none of the wishes are ever fulfilled, because even the Buddha cannot satisfy the insatiable desires and demands of humankind; and ultimately, if he truly granted humans an unlimited number of wishes as they wished, would the Buddha still be the Buddha—always providing miraculous and rare assistance?

That's right, most of us always want one thing and want three, have three and want seven, greedily wanting things beyond our reach. Greed seems to be a personality code programmed into the genes of humankind, a primal driving force that propels humans forward, further and further away from other animals. But like a double-edged sword, uncontrolled greed becomes a weapon that kills the human spirit.

Greedy people rarely seem to experience happiness. When they achieve something, they don't stop to enjoy it but continue to compare themselves to others, feeling restless because they are still inferior, and immediately embark on new pursuits.

Greedy people have so much: houses, cars, good incomes, friends, endless fun, yet they never feel they have enough. They always feel inferior to others, and they don't experience happiness or fulfillment in life. One day, even the most greedy person will surely grow weary, stop, and ask themselves: What is the ultimate destination of life?

It's not about death. The ultimate destination of each person's life is knowing what is enough. Knowing when enough is enough is the most important skill in the process of living life. Those who don't know when enough is enough are like a machine that keeps running forward, regardless of whether the machinery is worn out or overheating from blind greed; while the machine of someone who knows when enough is enough will stop and rest when needed, enjoying each small achievement in their long life, feeling happiness within themselves. Those who know when enough is enough are always at peace. They don't need to prove themselves to anyone, they don't compare their lives to others, they know how to satisfy their mind and body, they know how to live fully right now and here!

There's a great saying: "Don't cry because you don't have shoes, because some people don't even have legs to stand on!" Understanding this, we see that contentment brings joy to the poor, while the rich bring sadness to those who lack it. Whether a person's life is filled with suffering or happiness, if they know contentment and appreciate what they have, then everything they experience each day will be beautiful.
