The 'death intersection' on National Highway 1A

(Baonghean.vn) - "At the observation point, visibility is obstructed on the Vinh - Hanoi section of the new National Highway 1A. Therefore, when traffic participants move from the old National Highway 1A onto the new National Highway 1A, conflicts often occur at the intersection, leading to accidents," a representative of the Nghi Loc Police said.

According to statistics from the Nghi Loc District Police, from the beginning of 2016 to the present, two traffic accidents have occurred at the Bai Lu intersection (in Nghi Yen commune, Nghi Loc district), resulting in two fatalities. Additionally, three other traffic collisions have caused damage to vehicles and property of road users.

The most typical example is the accident that occurred at 2:50 PM on February 21, 2016. A woman driving a four-seater car with license plate 37A-276.89, carrying one passenger, was making a U-turn to cross the road when she was struck by a container truck with license plate 36C-089.15, driven by Mr. Dang Van Thuc.

Not stopping there, the container truck continued to crash into a passenger car with license plate 36A-16952. As a result, 5 people in the car were taken to the hospital in critical condition, and all three vehicles were severely damaged.

Ms. Pham Thi Son (born in 1969), who lives near the Bai Lu intersection, said: "Since the expansion of National Highway 1A, vehicles travel at high speeds, and the many trees in this area obstruct visibility, making it very dangerous. Especially during rush hour, when students leave school, the density of vehicles increases, leading to frequent traffic accidents."

Regarding the cause, Captain Nguyen Thanh Binh, Head of the Traffic Police Team of Nghi Loc District Police, said: "The observation point, on the Vinh - Hanoi direction along the new section of National Highway 1A, has obstructed visibility. Therefore, when traffic participants move from the old National Highway 1A onto the new National Highway 1A, conflicts often occur at the intersection, leading to accidents."

Furthermore, Captain Binh also suggested that the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee should study and install additional traffic lights at this intersection so that people can observe and avoid unfortunate accidents. At the same time, clear lane markings, road sections, and turning directions should be painted on both the new and old sections of National Highway 1A to avoid conflicts at the Bai Lu intersection, which could lead to accidents.
