The Russian S-500 complex is said to hit targets hundreds of kilometers away, becoming the air defense missile with the longest range in the world.

US intelligence sources revealed on May 24 that Russia had secretly tested the S-500 Prometei long-range air defense system and hit a target at a distance of up to 480 km, 80 km further than any previous test.CNBCreport.

In this test launch, the S-500 appears to have used an improved missile from the S-300V4 anti-ballistic missile system, giving it a greater range than any other air defense missile system in the world.

The Russian military revealed last month that it was testing the S-500 Prometei air defense missile system withSome outstanding combat features include the ability to destroy targets at altitudes above 100 km, where many foreign spy satellites are operating and out of range of all current air defense systems.

Russia declaresThe S-500 system has a range of 400 km and is designed to perform both air defense and ballistic missile interception missions, equivalent to the roles of the current S-400 and A-135 complexes of the Russian army. It alsocan destroy hypersonic missiles, drones, bombers and strategic aircraft, as well as US F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters.

Each S-500 unit can detect and simultaneously destroy 10 nuclear warheads flying at a speed of 23,400 km/h. The 40N6 missile uses a fragmentation warhead, achieving a target destruction rate of up to 95% in tests.

This new air defense complex promises to help Russia maintain a modern air defense network, capable of dealing with many new threats in the 21st century.
