Russia secretly tests the world's longest-range anti-aircraft missile.
The Russian S-500 system is believed to hit targets hundreds of kilometers away, making it the world's longest-range air defense missile system.
In this test launch, the S-500 appears to have used an improved version of the S-300V4 ballistic missile system, giving it a greater range than any other air defense missile system in the world.
The Russian military revealed last month that it was testing the S-500 Prometei air defense missile system. Some notable combat features include the ability to destroy targets at altitudes above 100 km, where many foreign spy satellites are operating and beyond the range of any current air defense system.
Russia declaresThe S-500 system has a range of 400 km and is designed to perform both air defense and ballistic missile interception tasks, equivalent to the roles of the S-400 and A-135 systems currently used by the Russian military. It also...It can destroy hypersonic missiles, drones, bombers and strategic aircraft, as well as the US F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters.
Each S-500 unit can detect and destroy up to 10 nuclear warheads simultaneously, traveling at speeds of 23,400 km/h. The 40N6 missile uses a fragmentation warhead and achieved a target destruction rate of up to 95% in tests.
This new air defense system promises to help Russia maintain a modern air defense network, capable of countering many new threats in the 21st century.
