According to Lieutenant General Viktor Poznikhir, Deputy Head of the Main Operations Directorate of the Russian General Staff, the terrorist groups' plan to attack Aleppo with chemical weapons was aimed at blaming the Syrian government forces.
He argued that opposition groups had taken advantage of the seven-day ceasefire (September 12-19) to replenish their ammunition and weapons and prepare for attacks aimed at controlling territories in Aleppo and Hama provinces. Therefore, the situation in Syria is deteriorating significantly.
Referring to the ceasefire agreement that expired on September 19, Poznikhir said that the ceasefire in Syria had been undermined as terrorist groups intensified their attacks.
"We were ready to extend the ceasefire, possibly indefinitely, and end hostilities between the parties. But all plans failed due to terrorist groups intensifying shelling of Syrian government forces," Poznikhir added.
Since the latest ceasefire in Syria collapsed, fighting in Aleppo has intensified. On September 27, Syrian government forces liberated most of the al-Farafira district in northwestern Aleppo province.
Yesterday (September 28), Russia announced its readiness to work with the US on the Syrian issue and will soon send experts to Geneva, Switzerland, to negotiate with the US side in efforts to stabilize the situation in Aleppo and other areas of Syria.
The US had previously threatened to halt diplomatic talks with Russia on the Syria issue, accusing Russia of being responsible for the attacks in Aleppo.
US Secretary of State John Kerry issued this warning during a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, considering it an ultimatum from the US in the five-year-long conflict in Syria.
