Responding to a question about the possibility of a nuclear conflict or war between Russia and NATO, Mr. Medvedev emphasized: "No one wants any war, especially a nuclear war, which is a threat to the survival of human civilization."
According to former President Medvedev, NATO nuclear weapons are aimed at facilities on Russian territory, just as Russian warheads are aimed at targets in Europe and the United States. Therefore, Mr. Medvedev believes that it is necessary to pursue a responsible policy.
Mr. Medvedev affirmed that the current crisis is worse than during the Cold War, because at that time Russia's partners did not try to push the situation to a climax, they did not impose sanctions on Russian industry, agriculture and individuals.
Mr Medvedev added that if the Russian leadership had taken an irresponsible stance, the country would have withdrawn from the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) because the signatories of the treaty are now on the Western sanctions list.
In addition, Mr. Medvedev stressed that Russia cannot be excluded from the G20 because this format was created by consensus. The former Russian President said that the G7 is no longer important after Russia decided to stop participating. However, former President Medvedev affirmed that the G20 is different because this group helped Russia overcome the economic crisis in 2008.
