Russia officially hands over Su-34M bomber aircraft to Algeria.
The acquisition of the Su-34M variant allows Algeria to replace its aging Su-24M fleet, enhancing its deterrence capabilities and improving its ability to coordinate operations with its existing Su-35 and Su-57 fighters.
The Algerian Air Force has officially received Su-34M frontline bombers from Russia. Images of the aircraft sporting desert camouflage and distinctive Algerian insignia confirm this new step in the modernization of the North African nation's air force.
Replacing the aging Su-24M fleet.
The delivery of the Su-34M marks the first time this type of aircraft has been exported abroad. Algeria, the largest international customer of the Su-24M series with nearly 40 aircraft in service, is expected to purchase a similar number of Su-34Ms to replace its aging fleet. The addition of the Su-34M is expected to revolutionize combat capabilities and enhance interoperability with the country's existing Su-30MKA and Su-35S fighters.

The Su-34 is currently the world's longest-range fighter aircraft, offering sustained combat capabilities comparable to strategic bombers. Developed from the airframe of the Su-27 air superiority fighter, the Su-34 is approximately 50% heavier, allowing it to carry a larger fuel capacity and significantly heavier weapons payloads.
Notably, the Su-34M variants are equipped with the Sych multi-purpose reconnaissance system. This system comprises three different variants, allowing the aircraft to gather real-time intelligence and perform precision strike missions. Additionally, Russia is also discussing the possibility of upgrading this aircraft with the AL-51F engine, which is used in the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter.
Strategic context and deterrence capabilities
In recent years, Algeria has rapidly expanded its air force capabilities. Following the acquisition of the Su-35 in February 2025 and the Su-57 in November 2025, the Su-34M will become the backbone of the country's defense strategy. Its long range combined with long-range missiles gives the Algerian Air Force the ability to counter targets at great distances offshore and across Europe.
Algeria's aggressive rearmament comes amid frequent US-led exercises in North Africa simulating attack scenarios against modern air defense systems like the S-400. Looking ahead, after completing the commissioning of the Su-34M, Algeria may focus on fifth-generation fighters such as China's Su-57 or J-35 to maintain its military superiority in the region.
