Russia has officially handed over a batch of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and man-portable air defense missile systems to Madagascar, marking a significant enhancement of its military capabilities.

The armed forces of Madagascar have received a valuable shipment of military aid from Russia, including some of the most modern equipment ever deployed in the island nation. Most notable on the delivery list are BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), along with large quantities of ammunition and accompanying infantry equipment.

The acquisition of the BMP-3 is seen as a leap forward in the ground combat capabilities of the Madagascar army. Before the arrival of these vehicles, the island nation's main ground combat force consisted of approximately 12 Soviet-era PT-76 light amphibious tanks, whose technical condition is currently unknown.

The BMP-3, with its integrated armament including a 100mm cannon, a 30mm automatic cannon, and a coaxial machine gun, is currently the most powerful ground vehicle ever deployed in the country's military history. Field images show that at least two BMP-3s have been delivered; however, the total number of vehicles in the shipment remains undisclosed.

Transportation methods and collaboration context

The weapons transport process is carried out through a large-scale military transport network. Specifically, heavy transport aircraft Il-76 and An-124 of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation have participated in the transport. Notably, these shipments are sometimes carried out under the guise of "humanitarian aid" to support disaster relief efforts, such as the delivery of 63 tons of goods after Hurricane Phithia in early 2025.

Military cooperation between Moscow and Madagascar has progressed rapidly following the political upheaval in October 2025. After former President Andry Rajoelina left for France, Randrianirina, commander of the elite CAPSAT unit, took power and actively sought support from Russia. Besides weapons, Russia also sent military experts to Madagascar starting in late 2025 to assist with training and the operation of new equipment.

Strategic importance

Russia's strengthening military ties with the new government in Madagascar reflects its efforts to increase its influence in the Indian Ocean region. For Madagascar, modern equipment from Russia not only helps modernize its outdated military but also strengthens its security capabilities amidst the many internal challenges following the coup.
