Russia is restoring its old A-50U early warning aircraft to compensate for fleet losses.
The A-50U recently delivered to the Russian Air Force is actually an aircraft that underwent an overhaul in 2011, aimed at addressing the shortage of AWACS aircraft after the loss of at least two.
Russia is working to restore its aging airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft to fill a firepower gap. Military analysts have just confirmed that the A-50U presented as "new" actually underwent a major overhaul more than a decade ago.
The true origin of the recently delivered A-50U.
On May 31, military sources in Russia announced the delivery of a "newly modernized" A-50U aircraft to the country's armed forces. However, data from the AviVector corporation indicates that this was actually an aircraft returned to service after repairs to several individual systems.
Specifically, the A-50U with registration number RF-92957 (tail number 47 "Red") is the first aircraft in the series modernization program, which was delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces in 2011. Before returning to service, the aircraft underwent a ground communication system inspection on May 30th after completing routine maintenance.
Technical specifications and combat capabilities
Although not a newly produced airframe, this A-50U is still equipped with electronic system upgrades to maintain its combat capability in modern conditions:
- Display system:Improve the operator's working position with a high-resolution display.
- Control system:Installing a next-generation flight control and navigation system.
- Radio combination:Equipped with the Shmel system, which operates based on the Argon-50 computer.
- Mission:Conduct reconnaissance and detect targets in the air, on the ground, and at sea.
Efforts to compensate for the loss of the AWACS squadron.
Restoring the old airframes is seen as an urgent solution for Russia. In the current conflict, Russia has confirmed the loss of at least two aircraft of this type. The first A-50U (RF-50601) was shot down in January 2024, followed by another lost over the Sea of Azov in February of the same year.
Notably, the maintenance capacity for this aircraft type is also facing numerous challenges. On the night of March 17, 2026, Aviation Repair Plant No. 123 in Staraya Russa, Novgorod region – a key facility capable of maintaining the A-50 – recorded attacks that affected the progress of restoring the fleet.
